Anxiety

Anxiety in older adults and the seriously ill is common, treatable, and routinely mistaken for something else. We evaluate and treat it as part of primary care, in the home where it shows up.

How we care for it at home

  • Careful evaluation that separates anxiety from medical mimics — thyroid, cardiac, medication.
  • Treatment tuned to older adults, avoiding the sedatives that cause falls and confusion.
  • Non-pharmacologic strategies the family can actually implement.
  • Coordination with therapy and psychiatry when specialty care helps.

What we watch for

  • Overlap with depression, which is nearly universal.
  • Sleep, appetite, and function.
  • Benzodiazepine and alcohol use.
  • Caregiver anxiety, which often drives the patient's.
